Venice - Saturday

Today was our last full day in Venice. Though cool this morning and rainy this afternoon, we had a marvellous time. The day's highlight was our visit to the famous Cafe Florian in St. Mark's Square. This coffee house is the coffee house of all coffee houses in this city. It has operated continuously since 1720, so to sit in this elegant old cafe is to sit in history. Formally attired waiters, impeccable service, perfect espresso, excellent food, live music - what's not to like?  Of course, many famous people frequented this delightful spot long before our visit, among them Wagner, Byron, Goethe, well the list goes on.  We went for coffee but, once seated by our window table overlooking the piazza, we opted for a lunch -  tramezzini (sandwiches), dessert, and coffee. It was a very delightful experience. Wally couldn't stop smiling - just check out his expression!  Today in St. Mark's Square, there was lots of excitement as chairs and a stage had been erected for the graduation ceremony for the University of Venice's Ca' Foscari. When we came out of Florian's after our two hour "coffee" time, we saw a huge crowd in the square  congregating for the event. I can't imagine a more amazing place for a graduation!
