A Night at the Opera
Of course you are all wondering about our night at the opera. Well, it did not disappoint. Seeing the wonderful opera, Don Carlo, in the Teatro Colon, one of the greatest opera houses in the world in terms of design, acoustics and sheer splendor, was a thrill. We had heard that one "dresses" for the opera in Buenos Aires, so we donned our finest and set out to find a taxi to get us there. This was our first experience flagging down a taxi here, but the number of taxis which pass our front door are numerous so we had no problem getting one to stop and making clear our instructions. Our seats were in the palco alto in a box for six. Since the seats within the box are first come- first serve, we were determined to get the front two seats, so arrived early well before the doors opened and were first in line. Our seats were very good and we had an unobstructed view of the magnificent staging for this production. The singing was great and the costume team and Oscar-winning set designer pulled out all the stops for this production. Flames engulfed the heretics, heavenly voices projected from the great dome in the middle of the theatre, and the stage rotated according to a variety of scenes, one which included a giant hand, symbolizing the omnipresent might of the Spanish Inquisition. Our seats allowed us entry into the Gold Room during intermission to mingle with the who's who of Buenos Aires. After the opera which was close to four hours in length, we exited into the chilly midnight air to flag down another taxi to get us home. It was truly a night to remember!
